Buildings in the 200 block of North Meridian Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 1964

Description: Time stamped April 1964. Signs are seen for the Capitol Book Store. The four-story brick structure stood north of the Marion Block and faced the Federal Building shown in the foreground. Through the years the upper floors were apartments and the two ground-level spaces housed the Marion Cafe, invalid and hospital supplies, a tire store, and by 1964, when this slide was made, a pizza store was on the right and the Capitol Book Store on the left. The Capitol Book Store operated from this spot from 1926 through about 1972. The store, described in newspapers as having an old-world smell, creaky floors, and educated browsers, was operated for 30 years by E. R. Blessing, then by Morris Epstein, and later Mr. & Mrs. Kenneth L. Bracket who moved the store to E. Washington Street. In about 1970, Indiana Bell began buying property in this block and it was razed between 1972 and 1974 for the construction of the Indiana Bell building.
