Baldwin Building on Monument Circle, Indianapolis, Indiana, circa 1963

Description: Five-story Second Empire style building with a mansard roof and dormer windows located on the southeast quadrant of Monument Circle. Businesses within include Hale Hats and Circle Tavern on the first level and Kindreds Studio on the 2nd floor. Located in the Circle Theater to the left is Gillman Salon Shoes (39 Monument Circle). Behind the structure is the Hotel Washington. Flower beds on the grounds of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument are in the forground. A sign for Cleveland Wrecking Company indicates that the building is soon to be razed. The Indianapolis Power and Light Company (the Electric Building), to the right, purchased the building in 1959 for future growth, but allowed tenants to remain until their leases ended. Demolition began in June 1963 to make way for an eleven-story addition to the IPL building. The building was constructed as the Circle Park Hotel in 1879 by Marie Rhodius. It later housed the Kingston Hotel and was also known as the Circle Building. It was renamed the Baldwin Building when purchased by the Baldwin Piano Company in 1925.Slide is time stamped August 1963. Gillmans Shoe Salon was located at 39 Monument Circle; Circle Tavern was #37, and Hale Hat shop (35 Monument Circle). Signs for Kindreds Studio Photographer are seen on the second floor. The sign above #33 appears to read Cleveland.
