Description: |
A crowd of people are waiting to enter Butler Fieldhouse (later renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse) and cars are parked outside. Based on how closely the cars are parked together, it appears that the cars in the front row would need to leave first. Although the structure was not completely finished, the first game played in the Fieldhouse was on March 7, 1928, when the Bulldogs defeated Notre Dame in overtime, with a final score of 21-13. Unfortunately, some of the temporary bleachers collapsed before the start of the game, sending 500 people crashing to the floor. Thankfully, only 13 people were injured and only two of those people had to go to the hospital, but both were released the next day. At the time of the accident, the Butler Fieldhouse had a dirt floor (the basketball court was removable and was placed on top of the dirt floor) and the heating system caused the floor to thaw, causing the bleachers to slide to the ground. Several structural supports were added to the bleachers before the next public event. |
