Description: |
This plaque celebrates Butler University basketballs 1928 Indiana intercollegiate championship, which was achieved for the second year in a row. The basketball team won thirteen of their fifteen games against in-state opponents during the 1927-1928 basketball season. The plaque lists the team members as well as their coach, Tony Hinkle. Displayed at Hinkle Fieldhouse, this plaque also commemorates Butler Universitys overtime win over Notre Dame on March 7, 1928, which was the first basketball game played at Hinkle Fieldhouse. Earlier in the season, Butler University had lost to Notre Dame, 32-24, in a game played at South Bend. The 1928 Drift, Butler Universitys yearbook, states that on Wednesday evening March 7, Butler dedicated its new Field House at Fairview by defeating Notre Dame 21-13, after one of the greatest defensive battles that has ever taken place in the Capital City. The top central portion of the plaque should include a person holding a basketball, but that piece appears to be missing in this photograph. However, an outline of this feature still remains on the back of the plaque. |
