Doorway detail on the former College of Missions building in Irvington

Description: A color photograph showing a doorway detail on the former College of Missions building in Irvington. The stone carving in the lintel says Missions Building. Opened in 1910 by the Christian Womans Board of Missions, it was originally called the Sarah Davis Deterding Missionary Training School after the mother of one of its largest donors. Later renamed the College of Missions, the school offered graduate level courses, which was rare at the time for missionary training schools in the United States. Operational in Irvington at the same time that Butler University (called Butler College 1896-1923) called Irvington home, both schools allowed their students to take courses at the neighboring institution. Being a school for teaching future missionaries, the College of Missions offered many language courses that were not available at Butler, such as courses in Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, and Spanish. In 1928, Butler University moved to its current, Fairview Park campus and the College of Missions relocated to Connecticut.
