Description: |
A color photograph of the north side of the former College of Missions building in Irvington. Opened in 1910 by the Christian Womans Board of Missions, the building housed a training school for future missionaries until 1928. The organization was founded in 1874 by women of the Disciples of Christ faith (renamed the Church of Christ (Disciples of Christ) in 1968) who recognized the need for female missionaries. They believed that females could better serve women and children than their male counterparts. Their first president was Maria Butler Jameson, the daughter of Butler University founder Ovid Butler. She served in the role from 1874 until 1880 and again from 1881 until 1890. In order to train future missionaries, the Christian Womans Board of Mission raised money for the construction of the College of Missions in Irvington, a postgraduate level training school for both female and male missionaries planning to serve domestically and abroad. Although the school was organized and run by members of the Disciples of Christ faith, the school remained non denominational and hired both male and female faculty. The school opened in 1910 near Butler University and both schools allowed the others students to take classes at the neighboring institution and in some cases, the faculty worked at both institutions. Both schools operated in Irvington until 1928 when Butler moved to its current Fairview campus and the College of Missions moved to Connecticut. |
