Description: |
People stand or sit in the Clowes Memorial Hall lobby on both the ground floor and on the balconies, including two ushers, and flower arrangements decorate the space. On the left, a small portion of the circa 1630 Brussels tapestry titled The Miraculous Draught of Fishes is visible. Based on a cartoon by Raphael from The Acts of the Apostles, the tapestry was loaned by the Clowes Fund Collection. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot Clowes Memorial Hall officially opened on October 18, 1963. At the time of construction, the building was unique since it was designed to host a variety of events including orchestra concerts, ballets, operas, lectures, and University events. When the building first opened, the 24,000 square-feet of carpeted lobbies (the grand foyer and two side lobbies combined), were an often publicized feature of the new building. Rising six stories high, the lobbies reportedly provided 12 square-feet of space for each attendee. Since Clowes Memorial Hall could seat up to 2,200 people when it first opened, the math is slightly off, but the lobbies were still larger than those offered by other performing arts venues of the time, as most only provided two square-feet per person. |
