Clowes Memorial Hall seating

Description: The floor level seats and the patterned carpet in Clowes Memorial Hall as viewed from above. The Continental seating plan eliminated the need for central aisles and provided more leg room between seats, more central seats, and better views of the stage. Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, construction of the approximately 83,444 square-foot building began on August 15, 1960, and it officially opened on October 18, 1963. Built at a cost of approximately $3,600,000, the building was constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes. The majority of the financing was made possible by his widow, Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources. To ensure a successful design, many theatre design experts were consulted including Richard Kelly, design and decorative lighting; Jean Rosenthal, stage lighting and rigging; Ben Schlanger, seating and sight lines; and Bolt, Bernac and Newman Inc., acoustics. Many of the reports of the building during construction stated that cork flooring would be used to improve acoustics, but in the end, carpeting was installed, likely based on the wishes of Edith Clowes.
