Four people stand in Clowes Memorial Hall during construction

Description: Four people stand in Clowes Memorial Hall during construction. Handwriting on the back of the photograph lists the people as Ken, Lucille, Gene, and Leslie. They appear to be standing in what will become the seating area and are facing away from the stage. The ground was broken for Clowes Memorial Hall on August 15, 1960, and the December 1960, issue of The Butler Alumnus included a brief mention of the construction project. Excavation for Butlers future civic auditorium, Clowes Hall, began three months ago. The Ditch, as it is jestingly known, now contains a major part of the foundation for the $3,500,000 building (Clowes Memorial Hall Newest Butler Addition). Designed by architects John M. Johansen and Evans Woollen III, the approximately 83,444 square-foot building is constructed of reinforced concrete and limestone and officially opened on October 18, 1963. Constructed in honor of the late Dr. George Henry Alexander Clowes, the majority of the financing was made possible by his widow, Edith Clowes through the Clowes Foundation, but other funds were provided by Lilly Endowment, Inc. and Butler University, among other sources.
