| Description: |
Photograph of a rendering based on a sketch by Jock Bevan, highlighting the main auditorium in Clowes Memorial Hall. The artwork was used in the Festival Opening Program in October 1963. The program was made for the initial performances at the venue including a formal gala opening featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; a young peoples opening featuring Captain Kangaroo; a gala popular opening featuring Bob Hope; and a gala choral opening featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, and guest soloists performing Giuseppe Verdis Requiem. The auditorium was designed in the continental style without a central aisle, allowing for full-stage views from all seats and wider widths between the rows. Originally, the main floor featured 14 separate entrances. The stage house is nine stories high, while the stage is 51 feet wide at the proscenium and 55 feet deep. In this artwork, the audience is watching a ballet, while an orchestra is performing in the orchestra pit. |
