Photograph of a rendering based on a sketch by Jock Bevan, highlighting a side lobby in Clowes Memorial Hall. The artwork was used in the Festival Opening Program in October 1963. The program was made for the initial performances at the venue including a formal gala opening featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra; a young peoples opening featuring Captain Kangaroo; a gala popular opening featuring Bob Hope; and a gala choral opening featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, and guest soloists performing Giuseppe Verdis Requiem. When the building first opened, the 24,000 square-feet of carpeted lobbies (the grand foyer and two side lobbies combined), were an often publicized feature of the new building. Rising six stories high, the lobbies reportedly provided 12 square-feet of space for each attendee. Since Clowes Memorial Hall could seat up to 2,200 people when it first opened, the math is slightly off, but the lobbies were still larger than those offered by other performing arts venues of the time, as most only provided two square-feet per person. The artwork shows people standing or sitting in the lobby, or standing on one of the balconies. The program noted that some of the features of the building included private balconies, patios, terraces, smoking rooms, paintings, and floral decorations, as well as butler-caddie refreshment carts (p. 4). |
