Description: |
Located just south of Jordan Hall, the original Campus Club (C-Club) on Butler Universitys Fairview campus was a 50x100 foot building that could accommodate between 300 and 400 students. The C-Club sold meals and snacks and offered students a place to gather and hold events until an electrical fire destroyed the building on November 16, 1947. University officials reacted quickly and soon approved the construction of a new student union and began formulating plans for the building. The result of this work was Atherton Union, which opened on January 3, 1950, and included a new C-Club as well as a cafeteria, a bookstore, a room with billiard and ping pong tables, a lounge, a barber shop, offices for student activities and clubs such as The Butler Collegian and The Drift, as well as the Alumni Office, a faculty lounge, and other amenities. The 1950 Drift, the Universitys yearbook, includes impressions of the new building. The Campus Club, with its blue and white leather and chrome booths and tables, was the first to claim our attention. We ogled the Aztec motif on the ceiling, relaxed in the chairs, and lined up at the luxurious bar (p. 6). Cropping marks are located around the edges of the photograph. |
