The Butler University Band plays at the cornerstone laying ceremony for Atherton Union

Description: The Butler University Band plays at the cornerstone laying ceremony for Atherton Union while sitting on a portion of the building, even though it is still under construction. During the ceremony, the bands director, Dr. Charles Henzie (Class of 1936), led the audience in the singing of Gallery of Memories. In the September 28, 1948, Butler Collegian article, Parking Lot Gone; Building Going Up!, Jean Bancroft describes the event. Near the exact spot where I sometimes parked my old Chevie, Hilton U. Brown, chairman of the Universitys board of directors, placed some cold, damp cement on the cornerstone last Friday morning. Gone is the quonset hut, gone is the northeast corner of the parking lot, and in its stead, stands the partially erected structure of the new Student Union building. As each participant added his bit to the program, the recreational center seemed more a reality. Memories of the old Campus club, and the temporary one outside the school cafeteria, will linger long in the minds of Butler students. The laying of the cornerstone was symbolic that Butler will be bigger and better in the future (p. 2).
