Cornerstone laying ceremony for Atherton Union

Description: People stand around the Atherton Union cornerstone, carved with the year 1948, as someone seals the time capsule (left) with a hammer and a trowel sits to the right of the stone. Morning classes were shortened so students could attend the ceremony, which started at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, September 24, 1948. Speakers at the ceremony included Dr. E. Robert Andry (Class of 1930, M.A. and B.D. 1934), Head of the Department of Religion; senior Roderick Embry (Class of 1949); senior Patricia Bond (Class of 1949), President of the Student Council; and several members of the board of directors, including Hilton U. Brown, and J. I. Holcomb, among others. The Butler University Band played at the event and the time capsule was added to the cornerstone. Some of the items included in the time capsule were copies of the University Catalogue and The Butler Collegian, a ribbon from the groundbreaking shovel, a program from the cornerstone laying ceremony, and clippings from Indianapolis newspapers, explaining the Universitys decision to construct the building.
