Construction of the Butler Bowl

Description: This black and white photograph shows construction work underway on the Butler Bowl (later renamed the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl) while the Butler Fieldhouse (later renamed Hinkle Fieldhouse) is in the background. Construction on the athletic complex started in 1927 while the University was still located in Irvington. Originally, the Butler Bowl was built to accommodate approximately 35,000 fans with plans to add additional seating at a later date, if needed. The first Butler University football game was played in the Butler Bowl on October 13, 1928, when 8,000 fans watched the Bulldogs defeat Franklin College. The final score was 55-0.
