QUARRY LADSWith four returning lettermen to the squad, seven seniors and a very promising crop of underclassmen, the coming season looks bright for the Lads.In the opening game, November 2, 1955, we played host to the Ellettsville Eagles. The first half ofthe game proved interesting, but in the last half, the Lads could not match the superior height of theEagles, losing to the tune of 72 to 51.Ten days later, behind the splendid output of Pursell and Ellett, collecting 32 points between them, the Lads defeated Helmsburg by decisive score of 66 to 54.After trouncing Helmsburg, they showed much improvement by setting back a strong Gosport team bythe narrow margin of 67 to 63.With the record of two wins and one loss, the Quarry Lads journeyed to Unionville on the night ofNovember 18 but lost to the Arrows in an uphill battle by a score of 43 to 39.Now came the thriller of the year as the Lads entertained two very powerful Morgan County squads.Monrovia being the first team, furnished very stiff competition for us. The score was close all the waywith the Lads winning in the final seven seconds by a slim 3 point margin. Final score was 47 to 44.Then came the undefeated Morgantown team which turned the tide by a convincing score of 87 to50.The Lads next encountered the Smithville Skibos. The Lads played well behind a 17 point output byour leading scorer, Bob Mundy, but they lacked the height to rebound against a much taller Smithville team losing by a score of 80 to 58.The following Tuesday night, we played Worthington for the first time. It was a close game all theway; the score was tied, then a shot by a Worthington player gave them the victory by a score of 58-56.Two days later, December 16, stinging from the three setbacks we traveled to theSpencer Armoryand came out with a victory over Paragon by a score of 81 to 54.In our pre-holiday game, we defeated Lyons by a score of 97 to 47, setting a new record for the mostpoints scored in a single game. Bob Mundy contributed 28 points to the cause to boost his scoring average considerably. After the holidays, on January 6, we traveled to Ellettsville and encountered a very cold second halfto lose to an improved Ellettsville team with a score of 76 to 47.52* |
