mtmACTIVITIESENIOR WEINER ROAST—The Senior class started the school year off right by having a wein-er roast Thursday night, September 18, at the Hitch Rack. It was a big success and was enjoyed byall who attended.FRESHMEN INITIATED—The green freshmen were initiated by the sophomores on the nightof October 22. The main event of the evening was walking on cracked walnuts while blindfolded.Refreshments of ice cream and cookies were served to all.SENIOR SKATING PARTIES—On October 27 and March 3, the seniors had skating parties atthe local Airport roller rink. Everyone had a good time and plenty of thrills and spills.SENIOR CLASS PARTY—The senior class had a party on Monday night, November 10, at thehome of Mrs. Buchanan. This party was financed by the sale of season tickets for the basketballgames this year. Refreshments of candy, cocoa, and cookies were served.JUNIOR CLASS PLAYS—On Thursday, November 27, the juniors gave their first class play. Itwas entitled, Youre in the Army Now. Everyone received his share of thrills and excitement. OnTuesday, March 17, the juniors presented their second class play, Sulphur and Molasses. Thejuniors have been very successful in their plays.BASKETBALL BANQUET—On Saturday, February 21, a pot-luck supper was given in honor ofthe graduating basketball players. A large number of fans were present. Sweaters were awarded toErnest Freeman, James DeFord, Clifton Taylor, Robert Crum, and Warren Hanna. Also receivingsweaters were Charles Eads and Owen Sears, the two managers of this years team.THE SENIOR TRIPS—On Tuesday, February 24, the seniors journeyed to Bloomington. Themain event was the Payne trial. Before going to the trial we went through the Medical building at Indiana University. Everyone had a good time and profited by what he saw. The next trip was to Put-namville on April 2. We visited the Penal Farm and the State Police barracks. The trip was enjoyedby all. On April 6, the seniors took an exciting trip to Indianapolis. The feature of the day was atFort Harrison. Other places the seniors attended were the Girls School, Boys School, Central Insanehospital, Indianapolis Star, Central Business College, Blind-Deaf and Dumb school, Riley Hospital andthe Municipal Airport. Everyone learned much from the trip, and all had a nice time.P.-T. A. CARNIVAL—On Friday, March 20, the annual P.-T. A. carnival was held in the schoolgym. There was a large crowd and lots of door prizes were awarded.TRI-COUNTY COMMERCIAL and SPELLING CONTEST—The tri-county commercial contest,under the direction of Cleo L. Sinn, of the Stinesville high school, was held at Paragon high school,Tuesday, March 24. Mrs. Blanche M. Wean, head of Commerce Department at Central Normal College, Danville, Indiana, and her assistants, supervised the giving and grading of the tests.Nine schools participated in the contest. Ellettsville entered teams in the bookkeeping, and beginning and advanced typing contests. The advanced typing team won third place with Thelma Abbitt, Wilma Paschal, and Faye Libkie as the team. Individual honors were given to those who placedfirst, second, third with a medal. Gosport won the plaque wihch was awarded to the school havingthe most placings in the contest.The spelling contest began at 7 oclock and Ellettsville was represented by six contestants fromthe seventh and twelfth grades. The winner was Marion Rumple, of Stinesville. Our school did notwin any honors but they made a good showing and the school is proud of them.MONROE COUNTY SPELLING CONTEST—The Monroe county spelling contest was held March28th at Ellettsville high school under the direction of Mr. Poling, county superintendent. Fifteenschools entered teams with one pupil from each grade, from the third grade through to the eighth.There were thirty-five pupils picked from the senior group and fifteen pupils from the junior group.In the morning everyone took a written test. The fifty highest spellers in the contest spelled orallyin the afternoon.Clear Creek won first place for the team and Stinesville won second place. Ancel Chasteen, fromSmithville, won first in individual work; Phyllis Hudson, from Waterworks, was second; Wilma JeanDeFord, from Ellettsville, was third; and Doris Hardy, also of Ellettsville, was fourth.FRESHMAN BANQUET—The freshmen enjoyed their annual freshman banquet on March 31, inthe old gym. They had a nice banquet and everyone enjoyed themselves very much.HIGH SCHOOL CHORUS—The high school chorus class has about thirty-five members this year.The high school chorus participated in the Tri-County Music Festival, which was held on April 10, in theMartinsville high school gymnasium. Nine schools participated in this festival.SENIOR PLAY—The senior? gave a hill-billy play entitled, Let er Go, Gallagher, on April21.
