SENIOR NIGHTSenior year is a pivotal part of high school. It is thelast chance to make high school a positive andmemorable experience before students move on toadulthood. This is especially true for seniorDemetrius Ellett who was determined to end theseason strong before graduating. One of the perksof being a senior on the team is the new leadershiprole that comes with seniority. Ellet said that hehad to lead and set an example for the[underclassmen]. Senior night was an opportunityto showcase Ellets and the other seniorsaccomplishments during the current and pastseasons. It shows that we survived this sport forso long, said Ellet, we wanted to bring light tothat and show that we are still dedicated towrestling.MAKING A STATEMENTThe highest level a high school athlete can achieve is competing in theannual state competition. Junior Noah Hunt discusses his participationin the event. To wrestle in the state competition is an incredible honor. It takes talent, dedication, and a lot of practice to be able tocompete on such a high level against the best athletes inIndiana. Junior Noah Hunt represented BloomingtonSouth at the IHSAA State Wrestling Competition inIndianapolis. He competed at Bankers Life Fieldhouse inthe 126 pound weight class. It was amazing, said Huntand It was like nothing else I have ever experienced. To get to this point was no easy task. Last season,Hunt suffered from an acl tear that took him out ofcompeting at state. Hunt said, [My main goal] for thisseason was to make it to state which required hours ofsurgery, rest, and rehabilitation. Hunt and the teampracticed every day during the season and cut weight; atruly intense process. Cutting weight requires the athlete tostick to a very specific and difficult diet throughout theseason. This helps the wrestler stay in a certain weightclass for the competition. Managing weight during theholidays can be incredibly difficult and quite a sacrificewhen faced with an abundance of holiday foods. Althougha regimented diet is incredibly challenging, Hunt wasdetermined to eat correcdy and work out in order to reachhis goal. The rewards and benefits of working diligently are notoverlooked or taken for granted by the South wrestlingteam. They braved sweltering weight rooms, numerousinjuries, challenging diets, and long practices in order to betriumphant. Typical practices included the same intensegrappling techniques as the meets. Throws, take downs, and various holds and maneuvers are implemented withthe hope of leading to a pin or the win. Additionally, wrestling requires control and self-discipline concerningweight training, mindset, and building overall endurance inorder to compete and contribute to a team win.Not only did Bloomington South end their season witha record of 14-7, but Hunt achieved his personal goal andplaced 8th in the IHSSA state competition. However, thisachievement did not come without issues.. During the meet,Hunt tore his other acl. It was my last match, and I twistedmy knee, said Hunt, I went [straight] down. Although thisinjury forced Hunt to undergo another surgery and monthsof rehabilitation, he is determined to not let it slow himdown. My ultimate goal is to go back to state, said Hunt, and Im going to win.-SARAH BROWN92 | Athletics NORTH KOREA TEST FIRES A BALLISTIC MISSILE OVER THE SEA OF JAPAN 2/121 FRANK-WALTER STEINMEIER IS |
