Description: UJ<OOLUOJH*-TUUJ0_i<During the 2016 Rio Olympics, Ryan Lochte, a twelve timeUS Olympic medalist, claimed that he and three of histeammates were robbed at gunpoint by people posing as ipolice while they were out in Rio, a city with a relatively Ihigh crime rate. However, after surveillance footage of the Isupposed altercation was released, it was learned that therobbers were security guards of a gas station whodemanded Lochte and his teammates pay repair costs forthe station bathroom, which the swimmers had vandalized.PHOTO COURTESY OF CREATIVE COMMONSI hope that he has learned hislesson. If he is going to besuccessful and famous, he willbe under a microscope. Peopleat his level [of fame] dont reallyhave the luxury of makingmistakes because the world willknow and scrutinize them.JUNIORMACKENZIELOOZEIt is really disappointingthat athletes can think thatbecause of their status, theyare above the law and set abad example for those wholook up to themSOPHOMORERILEYHALLORANI. Senior Matthew Jerdenwon the 200 medley relay, the 400 free relay, the 100butterfly, and the 100 breaststroke. The boys went on toplace fourth at State, with Jerden again winning the 100breaststroke. Like Hasketts, Jerdens success was a matterof mental as well as physical strength. Ive made a lot ofprogress mentally and physically. Ive worked much harderthan in the past few years, he said. This incredible feat would not have been possiblewithout the rest of the team. Although swimming is anindividual sport, the members of the team are always thereto support each other during practices and competitions.Without this encouragement, athletes like Jerden wouldnot be able to compete at a higher level. Having the teamaround is crucial to development as they are the ones whoshow their support, and without them [swimming]wouldnt be as fun. Both the boys and the girls swim teams wereimmensely successful during this season. They practicedhard every day, partook in many team events, and werevictorious in their Sectional and State meets. Although it isnot easy, every member can agree that being on the team isinspiring. Swimming is a great way to forget about all ofmy problems and to be focused on what I love doing best, junior Kyle Janis said.AND GEORGE MICHAEL 2/12 DAVID BOWIE WINS 4 POSTHUMOUS AWARDS FOR FINAL STUDIO ALBUM 2/12 [ Athletics | 91
