TIT—■PAGE BY PAGELast year, the Monroe County Youth Council created an asset enrichedprogram called Page by Page based on the Search Institutes 40Developmental Assets. This year, the council is implementing theirJ$$\ PRISM T£/ program in the community, specifically at the Ellettsville Boys and Girls§lJM i^i^^—B^^^^ijjijijijijijijjjjjijjjjjjjjjijjjjj^iuiJi Club. Aliya Rife, a co-founder of the program in Bloomington. establishedJB i^k : the mission for the council to apply at the Boys and Girls Club on a weeklyfe fl i^i^^^ basis: the program works towards Building assets in children, teens, andin the community through reading, reflection, and engagement.Rife believes the program is specifically important in Monroe County becauseBloomington offers a lot of social services, allowing families and kids who need[programs] like Page by Page to come here. She especially likes the positive identityasset; she believes it is important for children to see themselves positively so thatthey can feel more confident. Rife has learned a few assets of her own, such aspatience, as she has come to realize that kids have so many different interpretationsand perspectives while learning. Page by Page allows children to explore theirimagination while absorbing and finding developmental assets in themselves. The name of the festival was inspired by theblooming Lotus flower, which flourishes in all parts of the world, including Bloomington.The flower symbolizes the relationship Bloomington contains with other cultures: theconnections the city holds with different cultures is expressed through the various musicgenres played at the venues located on the Square.Lotus is important to Bloomington because it gives manypeople in our community the chance to experience avariety of different cultures through music, and it alsohelps out many local food establishments.SENIOR WILLIAM RIGGERT[Bloomington is] such a diverse town since IU is here.Getting the opportunity to celebrate good music anddifferent cultures reflects on Bloomington really well.SENIOR GABBRIELLE HETRICKI think that [Lotus] is great for the community art scene.JUNIOR PETER GRUMBLINGMy favorite thing about Lotus is probably the people.
