Description: COzDaLL5Z0z>-ID \oRunning on its own can be hard, but some peoplego to the extremes to finish a race. Twenty -fouryear old Maggie Nolting, a mini marathon runner, trained hard for a race taking place in Nevada, butshe broke her foot in the process. Not wanting togive up, Nolting continued to train and ran her13.1 mile race in 3 hours 32 minutes and 13seconds entirely on crutches. PHOTOCOURTESY OF CREATIVE COMMONSI can say with almost 100%certainty that I would not[participate in the race]. Crutchesare a lot harder than they look, Icouldnt imagine hours of racing.Noltings time averaged about 16minute mile pace, which isextraordinary.JUNIOR HADLEYKNAUSIf put in her position, I wouldparticipate. Running is a hugecommitment. I have run a halfmarathon before in one hour andfifty-five minutes. I had a bettertime than Maggie, but I wasnt oncrutches.JUNIOR IANPFEIFFERALL ABOUTTHE RUNWhat was your longest run?Grace Oeding: My longest run was about 70-75 minutes. Iremember it being really hot that day so we had to take a waterbreak just at random water fountains.Jake Wisniewski: My longest run I think was about 11.5 milesGO: Oh my gosh!JW: It was really fun because we were going so fast and so far,but it was really boring because it was so fast and so far. I meanwe were just running on these trails and just kept on going andgoing.GO: Wait, what trails did you go on?JW: Rails to Trails.GO: Thats 11 miles long?!JW: Well, we went out and then back, and then we went aroundthe school one time. My favorite long run was to [lake] Griffy. What is your favorite course?GO: Which was the one that went around the circle and throughthe woods? Lafayette? West Lafayette?JW: Harrison.GO: My favorite meet was the Harrison one because it wentthrough wooded trails, and it was mainly flat except for one bighill. But I like the woods and the trails. It was nice.JW: My favorite would be New Haven, or maybe Fort Waynebecause its just a lot of long stretches so you can go really fast, and then you get to run through the woods. Its really nice andcool. Its just cool to pass people in there. What is your favorite place to run?GO: I like to run downtown; its a nice atmosphere theres just alot of people and I like running where there are a lot of people, its not boring. Its not like you are just in a trail like looking atthe trees. The boys and girls team are similar, but very differentin many ways. Juniors Grace Oeding and JakeWisniewski explain their experience on the crosscountry team.JW: I like going to Griffy because you get to go throughdowntown, and its just a really fast long run. What is your favorite team tradition?GO: Team dinners, every Friday before the Saturday meet we goto a team members house and have dinner and just hang out.Its super fun.JW: Well, we used to do team dinners, but now we have like 60guys, so we cant do that. The breakdown before we actually runthe meet, and we get together and just laugh and just soundreally intimidating, and we just break it down, it gets youpumpedGO: Psych sisters, thats another one of my favorite traditions. Its a really good team bonding experience, and its nice to knowthat someone is caring about you enough to get you a little gift.We draw a name out of a bucket, and each week we have atheme like socks or gatorades, and then we give our person agift.JW: Why dont we have psych sisters?!What were your main goals for the season?Did you achieve them?JW: I guess I wanted to PR, and I did that, so Im happy. I wantto break 16, and my pr right now is 16:22 so Im pretty close todoing that.GO: My goal was to break 23 minutes. No, actually, my goal isto beat Jake Wisniewski.JW: Race me.INTERVIEW CONDUCTED BY TORRAN BOMBAARE KILLED IN A SCHOOL BOMBING 10/26IDOZENS ARE ARRESTED FOR IRS PHONE SCAMS IN INDIA 10/27!
