It makes it really hard to senda quick message.*52%1 SOPHOMORE TESS HARRISON26%ONE STEP AT A TIMEOn a chill/, rain/ Saturday in September, hundreds of Bloomington residents ran,walked, and volunteered for the 17th annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer.On September 17, 2016, South students andBloomington residents alike participated in the 17thannual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer 5K run to benefit theIU Health Olcott Center. In previous years, Southstudents participated in the run as a part of TeamSouth, which was set up by Panther Activity Council.This year, however, a new club was formed at South toplan for the September 5k: the Hoosiers OutrunCancer Committee.Senior Ivy Kehoe first participated in the 5K as afreshman. This year, however, her role in the eventwas very different: Kehoe was co-president of the HOCcommittee. Our goal this year, since we are a newclub, was not to get a lot of runners, Kehoe explained.We really wanted to get the word out about the OlcottCenter and for more people to be aware of thisamazing resource. Because her family has beenaffected by cancer, as have millions of Americans, thesignificance of the event is not beyond Kehoe. Beingable to participate [in the 5k] and to know that yourecontributing to those who are struggling with canceris the best thing you can do.Junior Elijah Earle was also a member of theHOC Committee. According to Earle, the committeewas responsible for getting South hyped for the raceday. He added that the committee members wantedto encourage people to participate by running or bybeing spirit runners in the race. In order to completethis task, the team publicized the event as much aspossible, including filming promotional videos,making posters, and painting around the school. Earlealso enjoyed participating in the race and appreciatedthe meaning behind the fundraising that was done.
