Summerfest wasfocused on honoring members of the LGBT+community, yet it was inclusive of all people. JuniorCarter Makice felt that the festival was geared towardsall the inhabitants of Bloomington, and noticed peopleof all ages at the event. Summerfest was organized byBloomington PRIDE and included live performances, booths, food, dance parties and much more. Livemusic, theatre, a drag show, aerial arts, and streetperformers made for an entertaining evening. It [was]nice to have a place where you can just be yourself andbe celebrated, sophomore Lillian Thomas said.Local organizations hosted workshops, plannedactivities, and promoted their work through booths setup along the street. Thomas went to Summerfest notonly thanks to the encouragement of her friends, manyof whom also attended, but also because she signed upto volunteer at Bloomington PRIDEs booth. At thebooth she sold buttons made by the youth in PRISM,a youth group celebrating all sexualBloomingtons local PRIDE festival toorientations, gender identities, and genderexpressions. Many restaurants, eateries, and food truckswere at the festival selling their delicacies andshowing support, which was a highlight for bothThomas and Makice. Thomas enjoyed a reallygood frozen hot chocolate, and Makice had tacosfrom a food truck. He also thought it was neat to seea lot of local businesses and groups promoting]equality. The food trucks were Makices favoritepart of Summerfest, and Thomass favorite event wasPRISMs Know Your Glow dance party. A lot of [her]friends were there and [she] just had a really goodtime, Thomas said. Both agreed that Summerfest is an importantevent, and they encourage people to go in 2017.Makice concluded that Summerfest is [important]because it provides a lot of visibility for the [LGBT+]community which is normally fairly low key, and itsa good way for people to learn more about the queercommunity in a non threatening environment.- ANNEKA NELSON LAIRDR A ROAD RACE ACCIDENT 9/17 [VIOLENT PROTESTS AGAINST CONGOS PRESIDENT KILL 44 PEOPLE 9/201Community 125 |
