PIPPINEvery year the Sounds of South Choirpreforms a show in the fall. This year themusical chosen was Pippin - a story centeredaround a man searching for a purpose and hisjourney to find it.Every year high school students in Souths advanced choir, Soundsof South, spend their summers practicing for a show they performin the fall. In the past, Sounds of South (SOS) has put on traditionalBroadway classics such as Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera, andBeauty and the Beast. However, this year SOS took a differentapproach and chose to preform a show with which not everyone isfamiliar with - a show entitled Pippin. The show centers around a young man named Pippin, who istrying to find ways to be extraordinary. Senior Meredith Burnham, who played Pippins grandmother Berthe, said Pippin is trying tofind a meaning to life by going through all these differentadventures, such as war. In the end, he falls in love with a girl andrealizes that life doesnt have to be that extraordinary. Berthe playsa role in sending Pippin on his adventures as she encourages himto go out and live life to its fullest because [one] never knows whenlife is gonna end, Burnham said.Junior Elijah Earle played the lead role of Pippin. Being only ajunior, stepping up and playing this role was challenging andexciting at the same time. Earle said that while playing the lead wasfun, it was also a little stressful considering how much rehearsaltime is needed for such as big role. In the end, Earle thought thatPippin went really well, and he was enthused about the greatturnout of over 1000 audience members in four performances. Ithink we put our hearts out there and put on a great show, Earlesaid.Another junior who was given the opportunity to have a majorrole in the show was Hadley Knaus, who played Fastrada, Pippinsstep-mother. She also agreed that it was a little nerve-racking atfirst, but [she] had an absolute blast with it. Although playingtheses role was stressful, the cast found ways to make jokes andlighten the mood. Knaus favorite moment onstage was whenElijah was handed a recorder in a pretty serious scene whiledialogue was going on next to him and [he] decided to play thetheme song from Titanic, [she] couldnt help but laugh.Sounds of South is ready and excited to go into the rest of theyear with their winter concert in December and their Finale concertin May. After that, they will begin this process all over again whenthey begin rehearsing for their Fall 2017 show.16 | Academics | A MAGNITUDE 6.2 EARTHQUAKE HITS CENTRAL ITALY 8/241 LACHLAN SMART BECOMES YOUNGEST PERSC^ Tc |
