~HOW MANKevin Raney swiveled back and forth inhis chair as the scratching of pencil onpaper filled the classroom. He watchedthe students hard at work, heads turned;toward the desk, fingers flying over the:buttons of their calculators, and smiled. He thought back to the previous teams, the winners, and he spun his chairround and looked nostalgically at theaques lining his back chalkboard like-soldiers at attention. For the past 10 years, Raney hadbeen coach of the Bloomington SouthMath League team, a group of mathovers who take a six-question test oncemonth to compete against other highhools in the Indiana MathematicsLeague The top five student scores fromact as each schoolsscore, and whoever has thehighest score at the end of the year isdeclared the winner. And out of all theteams, South has historically been oneof the strongest: eight regionalchampionships (including five since2007), members with perfect scores, and multiple top five state finishes.Despite this consistent success, however, Souths Math League hasflown under the typical South studentsradar. But why? With all theirchapionships, they are up there withother competitive teams and clubs asthe most successful. According tosophomore Matthew Zelenin, it isbecause of the stereotypes surroundingmath leagues.People overestimate itsdifficulty, he said, a two year-memberof the team. People think its hardmath, but its really not. Its nothing youlearn in Calculus.Senior Connor Abram, a fouriGf^nember of the squad, sharessimilar opinions. It can be frustrating, he said, but thats because you should knowthe answers, but you dont. Everyoneshould do math league.Raney pulled himself away fromthe plaques. He didnt do this towithhold a reputation, or for success, orfor recognition. Suddenly, a few of theteam members stood up, test in hand.Raney smiled. He does it for the math.-JAMES TANFORDconsistentthe SouthMath LeaSueteamlittleThehas receivedrecognition.team members, however, dont mind— they just want themath.FAMLAST WORDSIn Sounds of Souths production ofLes Miserables during the month ofOctober, nearly the entire cast diesby the end.
