At just thelast moment, when it appeared asthough the ball would land safely inSouths goal, the gloved hands of thegoalie made contact and averted thepath of the black and white sphere.No goal. Bloomington South fanserupted into cheers.At South, a feat like this wasunprecedented. Never before had theboys soccer team won the Sectionaltitle against Bloomington North onpenalty kicks. Varsity playersjunior Andres Hernandez-Jimenez and senior Kelly Dunigandemonstrate some of their own tricks.junior Andres Hernandez-Jimenezsenior Kelly Dunigandit for this historic win, but thereere also many other younger playersthat aided the team in getting to thispoint.2013 had been an unusuallygood year for the underclassmen, asmany stepped forward to fill the shoesof last years graduating class.Freshman James Cherrys first-yearvarsity position was a pleasantsurprise: This was my first taste of highschool level soccer and I reallyenjoyed it. . f*^. jmmmmRiUnderclassmen contributionswere vital to the teams 12-8 record inthe regular season and the heart-pounding penalty kicks against Norththat beat the rivals for the Sectionaltitle. I was chosen to take one[penalty kick]; I made my shot andhelped my team to victory. It was amoment Ill never forget, saidfreshman Aldridge Zajmi.Several remaining upperclassmenassisted as well by leading and settinga strong example for less-experiencedplayers, forging a bond of teamworkand sportsmanship that served theteam well during an intense butexciting season.Explained junior Isaac Sullivan,This year, weve had a lot of newguys step up; its always tough to loseas many players as we did, but wehave a very strong core of guys, and Iknow we will be a very dangerousteam in the years to come.- HALLIE PEDERSENa
