Fords independent board scanned CIAoperations. The FBI defendeditself against invasion of privacycharges.In 1975 another mysterybegan to unravel. PatriciaHearst, Bill and Emily Harris—the Symbionese Liberation Army(SLA) members who avoidedofficials for over a year—werecaptured in San Francisco Sept.18, 1975. Many believed PattyHearst had been brainwashed.Others simply were baffled bythe conflicting testimony of thetrial.The seemingly never-endingviolence in Northern Irelandspread to London. A siege at arestaurant lasted over a weekbefore Irish Republican Army(IRA) members surrendered topolice. Caroline Kennedy,daughter of the late President,barely escaped death from anIRA bomb placed in the car inwhich she was to ride. The IRAsreason for the London bombingswas to force Britain to removetroops from Northern Ireland.In 1975 major civil warsbrought death to many in Lebanon and Portugal. While war disrupted those countries, Americawatched one of the closestWorld Series contests. The Cincinnati Reds were a four-to-three-game winner over the Boston Red Sox.New York City spent millionsof dollars more than it had, forcing the layoff of thousands offiremen, police and sanitationworkers. Controversy raged asto whether the federal government should assist in payingNew Yorks deficit. The Fordadministration offered a $2 billion loan.And in* Washington, D.C., thenations longest acting SupremeCourt justice, 77-year-old William O. Douglas, retired Nov.12, 1975. President Ford said,Your distinguished years ofservice are unequalled in all thehistory of the Court.Nov. 23 saw the death ofGeneralissimo Francisco Francoof Spain. With his death thesemi-dictatorship government ofthe past 50 years appeared ending. Juan Carlos assumed presidential responsibilities.The CIA chief of operations inGreece, Richard Welch, wasgunned down by three maskedassassins Dec. 24. An underground publication had revealedhis top secret identity shortlybefore the shooting.Dec. 29 was the date of amassive bombing at New YorksLa Guardia Airport. Eleven werekilled and nearly 100 injured,the bombing, the purpose ofwhich was never discovered.And along with otherincreases, postage rates went upfrom 10 to 13 cents. A decreasewas found in the nations deathtoll following the imposition ofthe 55-m.p.h. speed limit.The supersonic transportplane caused considerable controversy among environmentalgroups and businessmen. Environmentalists claimed the planewould destroy the earths ozonelayer, which provides protectionfrom the suns radiation.In college football theOklahoma Sooners finishednumber one in the nation,defeating Michigan in theOrange Bowl, 14-6.On Jan. 9, 1976, Red ChinasPremier Chou En-lai died. FormerPresident Nixon said, Only ahandful of men in the 20th century will ever match PremierChous impact on the history ofthe world.Earthquakes pounded Guatemala in early February 1976,killing nearly 15,000 and injuring over 3000. Many victimswere poor families living in rundown huts.Former Gov. Jimmy Carter ledDemocratic candidates in theNew Hampshire primary Feb.24. Ford led the Republicanswith Reagan close behind.And finally, here at home,Indiana Universitys hot shootingtop-ranked basketball team onceagain clinched the Big Ten title,and along with it the NCAAcrown, defeating Michigan 86-68.News 29 |
