But Ford metmore than friendly handshakes.On Sept. 5, 1975, in Sacramento, Calif., Lynette Frommeraised a gun at Ford. A securityagent grabbed the unfired gunand threw Ms. Fromme to theground.Then, on Sept. 22, 1975, SaraJane Moore fired at Ford as heleft his San Francisco hotel. Anex-Marine grabbed Ms. Mooreand the gun. Ford escapedunharmed.Also in 1975, school busing toachieve racial integrationspawned violent rallies and riots.In Boston hundreds of protesterswere arrested, and police werestationed in schools.In Louisville, Ky., 800 ArmyNational Guard troops werecalled in by Gov. Julian Carrollto maintain order. On riot dutywere 400 state troopers.
