Theydefeated both Columbusschools, Martinsville, CenterGrove and Bloomington Northto cap their first undefeated dualmeet season in almost 20 years. We had a strong seasonbecause of a tremendous groupof lady track runners. There wasa talented girl in every singleevent. Coming into the seasonthe girls had an idea that thiscould be a good team becausethe girls were good at othersports, Coach Glen Stidd said.During the spring seasonrain regularly stopped meetsand practices for the team. Andto amuse themselves, theywould find worms and throwthem on senior Tashi Johnsonbecause she hated them. Our whole team wouldbombard her with themwhenever we could. And onetime Tashi and I found a puddleon the apron to the high-jumppit and jumped in. When shegot out she was covered withthem. It was so funny, juniorJean Shaffer said. The Conference Indianatrack meet, which was held atLawrence Central during mid-season, was proving groundsfor the team. With strongperformances from everyone, the team was able to take homerunner-up honors behind Pike.I was excited when I heardwe got second. Pike didnt beatus by that much. I knew wewould do well, just not that well. After the meet we found outhow deep we really were andhow good we could be,sophomore Ashley Hawkinssaid.Senior Tashi Johnson andjunior Jean Shaffer hadoutstanding seasons as eachbroke the top ten in theirrespective events at the Statemeet. Johnson finished sixth inthe 200 meters and Shafferfinished second in the highjump.I was really happy I evenmade it to State because myhamstring injury the yearbefore made it difficult to comeback.
