Depending on their event,members reviewed information and materials,conducted experiments, took practice tests orbuilt structures.Going into the Regional at Sellersburg, theteam felt confident. Their goal was to win, andthey achieved it.We knew Sellersburg would be just astepping stone for State. It was just a practicerun, sophomore Dan Halla said.The team continued to practice and preparefor the State competition at IU.In the last few weeks before State, westarted to crack down. We didnt want tocelebrate before we even entered thecompetition, senior Jeremy Leitze said.Going into the State competition, the teamwas returning State champions. They had tomake sure that title didnt get to their heads.Since we won last year, we knew that if wegot overly confident, we would lose, Halla said.The coaches, Mrs. Cindy Kvale, science; Ms.Laura Domanski, science; Mrs. Janet Nichols,English; and Ms. Rebecca McGraw, played abig part in helping the team reach their goals.They have pushed us. They dont let us getcocky or arrogant, senior Nick Voakes said.At State, the team met their goal of winningfor two consecutive years. The win wasntunanimous, though. The team didnt know theyhad won until all the awards had beenannounced.Halla said, We didnt really think we weregoing to win. John McClement.Solar Bike Teamby Jordan GarnerThe boys and girls solar bike teamscompeted at the National Solar BikeRayce in Topeka, Kansas, May 30-31.The girls team won their division andthe mens team finished second.In the months leading up to therace, many hours were spent onconditioning. The race at the Nationalcompetition consisted of 33 lapstotaling 100km, with a break at the 90minute mark to recharge batteries.In January and February, we rodestationary bikes and worked onstrength and endurance two days aweek at Cycle Fit in the SRSC. InMarch and April, when it got warmer,Sounds of Southby Amanda RitchieIn January, Sounds of Southcompeted in District Solo &Ensemble, where both theensembles qualified for State.Sounds of South alsocompeted in District ISSMA, aclassical choir competition, aftertheir ensembles received superiorratings at State Solo &Ensemble. At State ISSMA, inearly May, Sounds of Southplaced sixth overall.They swept the Fiesta-ValNational competition in Atlanta,Georgia, in April, taking firstplace in Division IV show andclassical choirs, overall show andclassical choirs, and grandchampion choir. SeniorJonathan Ripley won best showchoir soloist.In Atlanta, right aftersinging the classical piece, peoplewere so moved they just sat insilence at first. Then, otherchoirs gave us a standingovation, senior Jane Herzel said.Members attributed theirsuccess to the fact that theyconsidered themselves a hardworking, dedicated group.We lost so many seniors lastyear; this years seniors had tostep in. It was hard in thebeginning, but they did a greatjob, junior Kate Stone said.Herzel said, ... Itis pretty suspenseful and drawn out,Park said.Martinsville tied South with a scoreof 89 at State and officials decided toallow a co-championship.It is scary knowing that one wordmakes the difference between achampionship and second place,junior Kathleen Tran said.A strong tradition is shared byMartinsville and South in Spell Bowlcompetition.Junior Anne Timberlake said, Wemet Martinsville at both the Regionaland State, so the competition wasrough.
