Description: Girls track wins SCC; boys take regionalThe 1982-83 girls track team finishedits season with a dual meet record ofthree wins and four losses.Despite a losing record, South wonthe South Central Conference (SCC) titleand was second in sectional competition.The Panthers were happy with theirsecond-place finish in sectionals. Theydefeated Bloomington North by onepoint and were second to ColumbusEast, who won by some 30 points andplaced at state.SCC Panther winners included seniorKaren Ratts in the shot put; junior LoriBennett in the 400-meter dash; juniorJane Lettelleir in the 110-meter lowhurdles; and the 400-meter relay team ofLettelleir, freshmen Tracy Hickman andStephanie Stokes, and sophomore JulieMcFall. The meet was stopped with twoevents to go because of thunderstormsand was finished two days later.In sectionals Lettelleir was seeded inthe number one position but was disqualified for a false start.Sophomore Kris Doba was second inboth sectionals and SCC but still brokethe school record and was the only Panther to go to state.LEFT: Sophomore Brent Brewersails over the bar in pole vault.RIGHT: Senior Tommy Whitereaches out during sectionals.The 1982-83 boys track team finishedits season as sectional, regional, andSouth Central Conference champions,with a record of 5-1, under first-yearcoach Tom Alwine.This was the first year BHS South hasever won the regional meet, sending arecord seven competitors to state. First-place finishers for South included seniorDan Gornall in the 800-meter run andsophomore Dan Burton in the pole vault.Burton went on to place second in thestate meet.South also blazed in the sectionalmeet, winning eight out of 15 events tocrush Bloomington North 122-89. Thiscompleted the triple crown — victoriesover North in county, sectional, and SCCmeets.Coach Alwine, a former South student, said the 1982-83 team was abuilding team but the seniors were realstandouts. He commented that seniorsDoug Wilson and Dan Gornall were excellent in the 1600- and 800-meter runs,respectively. Gornall was both sectionaland regional champion and placed atstate. Wilson won sectional and went onto place at state. Also, long jumpersJohn Carlson and Tom White contributed greatly and were leaders, according to Coach Alwine.Carlson won the honorary captain andB-man award.Other runners who went to state werejunior Eric Rush in the two-mile andjunior Don Adams in the 100-meterdash.Souths relay teams both set records.The 1600-meter relay, consisting ofCarlson, juniors Jeff Teague and BillPeterson, and sophomore Scott Kiesling,set a new sectional record. The 400-meter relay team, consisting of White,Adams, junior Dan Hayes, and freshmanRandy Perine, broke the school record.The Panthers started their seasonwith a four-point loss to Terre HauteNorth, which they later won by forfeitbecause of an ineligible Terre Haute runner. South went on to win four of thenext five dual meets, losing only toeighth-ranked Terre Haute South, tofinish the season with a record of 5-1.Alwine looks forward to the future.He said that even though this yearsteam was good, next years team will beeven better.i110 Track
