Description: mCompetition lets studentschallenge themselves(Continued from page 102)Several art students entered the nationalScholastic Art contest, which involvedentering a piece in one of six categories:drawing, painting, jewelry, sculpture,ceramics, and photography.For the first time Souths entire band participated in contests. Under the direction ofKern Hawkins, the band took a first place inthe Kokomo Invitational Marching Contest.In the Indiana State Music Associationmarching contest, the marching bandreceived a first-division rating.Jazz bands I and II both entered ISMAjazz band competition and received first-division ratings. In May the jazz bands participated in the International Music Festivalin New Orleans. To be invited, each bandhad to send an audition tape.The ISMA band solo and enemble contesthad 110 South participants. First-divisionratings were awarded to 82 students inthree divisions. The 52 people who wonfirst-division ratings in the first divisionwent on to the state contest, where firstswere awarded to 39 people.Several choir members entered the ISMAchoral solo and ensemble contest. DougEllis and Lori Grounds took first-division ratings in the solo contest. The trio of LoriGrounds, Claire Tennell, and StephanieWhite also took a first.In the ISMA orchestra contest, the quartet of Cindy Daggy, Fred Edelen, MaryHagan, and Sarah Johnson received a first-division rating.TOP LEFT: At regional solo and ensemblecontest, sophomore Brier Frasier performs her solo. Frasier received a second-place rating.TOP RIGHT: Projects entered in theWestinghouse Science Fair by seniorsPhil Guba and Mary Willett both went onto state competition.Competition 105
