Description: it1a aptSenior Emily Ehman has been an avidfan of the recent Democraticdebates. Ehman gives her insight andopinion on the candidates platforms.I like hearing the differences ofopinions on gun control from thecandidates, as well as distribution ofwealth and poverty issues. I thinkboth Sanders and Clinton have validpoints and differences on them. However, I think Clinton actuallyexplains how shes going to dothings, and what steps it will take toget done.s onSouth students made signs for the community advocating forTeen Dating Violence Awareness Month. In addition to being Black HistoryMonth, February is Teen DatingViolence Awareness month. ManySouth students work in thecommunity as Teen PeerAdvocates. Bloomingtons TeenPeer Advocates work through theMiddle Way House, a shelter forpeople who have been victims ofdomestic violence. Teen PeerAdvocates teamed up withmembers of Souths SPAA(Students Promoting Awarenessand Action). Together, they madesigns in order to bring awarenessto the dangers of dating andviolence.Junior Lauren Moore hasbeen a teen peer advocatethrough the Middle Way House fortwo years. Moore was trainedthere, where she learned skills tohelp people overcome some ofthe experiences they have faced. The employees at Middle WayHouse are legally required to telllaw officers when aggressivebehavior is reported to thembecause they are over 18 years ofage, so having trained high schooladvocates was a great benefit.Having teen members allowedpeople from the community tocome in and talk through theirexperiences without having toreport the incident to the police. Not everyone wants their issuesreported to authorities, Mooresaid. The signs were placed onstreet lights downtown, displayingmessages and encouragingawareness of teen dating anddomestic violence. Its not reallysomething that many studentsthink about, so we are here toraise awareness and preventfuture violence, Moore said.Junior Krista Konermanwas also a teen peer advocate. The whole goal of the Teen PeerAdvocate training was to helpothers affected with datingviolence, Konerman said. Wegive them the materials andinformation that they need.Konerman was part of the signmaking for Teen Dating ViolenceAwareness as well, and agreedthat it was important to informeveryone about dating violence. Its a major thing that affects somany people, Konerman said.Thats why it was an issueimportant enough for us to putthe information out there.- GRACE NUGENT AND ELLA NEED^SntLife
