There were three with me.Why, the one that had on a brown suit.Well, two of them had on brown suits.I mean the one that you went off and left at the HighSchool Building.Oh, then you are the one that offered to take her to thestation?Yes, why?Nothing, only she made me promise not to tell if I couldhelp it, for she said she treated you so rudely when she rushedoff, that she didnt want you to know who she was.Oh, botheration, I didnt mind that. Come on now andtell me. Please do, Louise.Cant do it, Harold, for I promised.Well, turn about is fair play. Youre not to tell her whoI am until she tells me who she is, declared Harold. All right, thats fair, agreed Louise as they parted at thesteps.II.Four years passed and Harold Wilson was completing hissenior year in college. Throughout all of his High School life,in the Moot Court and in the debates, he had been regarded asone who could become a splendid lawyer. It was withouthesitation then, that he began the study of law when he enteredthe university. Now he was graduating with honors, and everything indicated great success in his practice of law. Everyoneregarded him as the best law student of that year. However hehad never been able to discover who the girl in the brown veilwas. Louise Millican had kept her promises faithfully. The end of June was approaching and the close of Haroldscollege days but his plans for the summer were indefinite. Onemorning the postman left a dainty little note for him whichdecided that, as well as much of his future life. It was aninvitation to a house party- at Louise Millicans summer homeon the Hudson River. At the bottom of the invitation were thewords, The girl, who once wore a brown veil, will be here.Well that settles it, Ill be on hand, he declared as heread it.What is it? asked Jack Austin, Harolds roommate.Harold handed him the invitation and when he had finishedreading it he said, Why I received one too, this morning.Do you know Louise Millican? Harold asked quitesurprised.Yes, she and my sister are great friends. But what underthe sun does this mean here at the bottom of the page? That? Oh, Louise and I went to High School together andshe refers to an incident which happened during our senioryear.Harold grew quite confidential and related the story of TheGirl with the Brown Veil. When he had finished Jack wasquite amused.Yes, I expect it does seem funny but just that one glimpsewas enough. She is the girl of my pipe dreams.Well, old fellow, I wonder who she is. Ill do my best tofind out but I must be going now. That Latin exam, comes offin ten minutes.42 |
