FOOTBALLFOOTBALL SEASONFollowing Martinsville came the versatile New Albany team, doubtless the strongest team in southern Indiana. The visitors led Bloomington through the entire gameand amassed a total of five touchdowns to the Panthers none, before the final gunsounded. The New Albany backfield was very skillful and clever in executing theirplays. At the close of the season two of these backs were chosen among the statesoutstanding stars. The varsity traveled to Elwood the following week-end and put up a remarkablygood fight against the powerful up-state team. Due to the slippery field caused by adownpour of rain, the locals were unable to outscore the Northerners. The feature ofthis game was a sensational fifty-yard run by Wyatt, after he had intercepted an Elwoodforward pass. The homecoming game, which concluded the 1930 football schedule, came onNovember 22, when the team played Bicknell. The boys scored early in the contest andled the visitors by six points until the last few minutes of play. The opponents thenpushed over a touchdown and were successful in their attempt for the extra point. The defeat by one point in the final game of the season was rather a disappointment, butthe victories of the earlier part of the season overshadow this loss. The varsity squad displayed its charitable spirit when it offered its services in apost-season game with the alumni. The game was played on Thanksgiving morning andthe proceeds were donated to the unemployed of the city. The 1930 football season marked a decided change in the interest and support giventhe teams of B. H. S. In the preceding years a mere handful of backers attended thegames, but this year the team was excellently supported by capacity crowds. This waspartly due to the fact that it was the first year of the new athletic field, and partly dueto the marvelous performances of the teams in recent seasons.Coach Mumby will have a number of young, strong, and serious-minded men fromwhich to select his 1931 football team. Although many men will be lost from the squadby graduation, there are plenty of good workers to take their places. The men who willgraduate from the squad are: Lawrence Goodman (co-captain), Jack Canada, HowardMartin, Thomas OHaver, John Voliva, John Tatum, Harry Becker, Owen Summers,Luther Sanders, and Clyde Richeson. On an athletic team there is a group of men who serve their school, week after week, with untiring efforts. We wish to express our deep appreciation and sincere gratitudefor the services rendered by these men.By way of recognizing the football athletes services to the High School, the AthleticCouncil has awarded the major B to the following men: Lawrence Goodman andJoe Woodruff (co-captains), Russell Wyatt, Byron Branam, Jack Canada, Howard Martin, Woodrow Covington, Charles McDaniel, Francis Henson, Thomas OHaver, JohnVoliva, John Tatum, and William Hamilton (manager).
