FOOTBALLFOOTBALL SEASONThe 1930 football season, although marred by numerous ties and defeats administeredat the hands of the outstanding teams of the state, was on the whole successful.The team, outweighed by practically every opponent, fought with the spirit and vigorwhich have always been characteristic of the teams under the direction of our coach.Mr. Mumby was faced with the severe task of filling twelve vacant places left by thegraduation of twelve lettermen of last years squad. In an effort to overcome thishandicap he began an intensive drill ten days before the beginning of school at McCor-micks Creek State Park. In camp, the boys spent their time on intensive drills infundamentals and a general study of the principles of football.On September 27, Bloomington High School opened its strenuous schedule with a6 to 6 tie at Bloomfield. The outcome of the game was by no means a disappointmentas all the men showed promises of a great season. The Panther defense was the outstanding feature of the game.The following Friday Bloomington opened its home schedule and inaugurated thenew athletic field by defeating Dugger, 13 to 0. This was an exceedingly interestingcontest which brought out the remarkable ability of a seemingly inexperienced footballteam.Technical High School of Indianapolis was Bloomingtons next victim. This contest was staged on Technicals field and was the most thrilling game of the season. It wasfeatured by a touchdown that was a result of a forty-yard pass from Woodruff toHenson in the closing seconds of the game. Bloomington had been trailing 7 to 6, butthis play, just before the gun sounded brought a victory score of 13 to 7.The Panthers then journeyed to Brazil and played the first night game of the season.In this encounter the Mumbymen were shaded by a score of 19 to 14. The outcome ofthis game was influenced by the poor punting of the Bloomington backs.The Bloomington athletes were then hosts to the football team from WashingtonHigh School of Indianapolis, and held them to a 6 to 6 tie. This game was very excitingthroughout, due to the equality of the teams.The following Saturday the Mumbymen traveled to Indianapolis and met CathedralHigh School in Washington Park. The opponents handed Bloomington one of its worstdefeats of the season. Although the score was 26 to 0, our outweighed team fought themto the last minute. Later Cathedral was chosen by many critics as the strongest teamin the state.On October 31, our new athletic field was dedicated with a decisive victory overan ancient rival, Martinsville. The visitors scored the first touchdown, which addedmuch excitement to the battle, but Bloomington immediately tightened down andlaunched a victorious drive that completely outclassed the Artesians. The largest groupof supporters that ever witnessed a Bloomington High School football game turned outto see the boys win 46 to 7.Page Sixty-four |
