S.GOTHIC1921A FreshmanI watched him as he sauntered downThe High School Drive that morn,Quite all alone, and I could seeHis countenance forlorn.He mounted stairways and more stairsUnto Room Thirty-eight,And then went in and sat him downTo calmly meet his fate.When next I saw him just by chance,Twixt classes, in the hallPerplexity shone in his eyes --He didnt smile at all.He glanced first at his program cardThen looked around awhileTo try and find just where he was --He missed his room a mile!But two months later, when againI met him on the stairs,A Senior could no nearer beEntirely free from cares.In fact if I had never knownThe facts about the caseId thought he was of upper class,And saved this bit of space.William Binkley, 21.The RiverTheir ancient boughs in summers breezeSway with their leaves a-quiver,And seem to turn, that they may gazeDown on the placid river.For though theyve lived for many a yearThey look on one still older,Silently flowing to the sea;Though nearer, never bolder.For as it reaches the great seaTo there be lost forever,The trees see it flow on and onForever and forever.So nature never tires, it seems;The river, never ending,Ripples still gently in the breezeThat slowly sways the aged treesThat lie around the bending.Fifty
