Basket Ball--1913-4THE PROPHECY in last years Gothic concerning a successfulbasket ball season for B. H. S. this year has been wholly ful-filled. Captain Reeds five scored 229 points, allowing theiropponents 170 points. Jers Rogers is responsible for thegreat big half of these scores and play-ing in his usual whirlwind fashiongave the Purple and White supportersenough fast basket ball to keep thefever alive until the next season, whenwith our new gym we have everyreason to believe we shall have evena better team than we had this year,for all this years men will be in thegame with this years experience be-hind them.Perhaps all that should be said inthis review of the season should bethat we took Wingate, last years andthis years state champions, across tothe tune of 21 to 18 at eight oclockon the evening of January 2, 1914. Thisscore will always sound about like amillion to nothing in the ears of allthe students of B. H. S. who saw thegame. Critics say that it was the best exhibition of basket ball ever witness-ed in Bloomington. At the end of the first half the score stood 9 to 8 in favor of B. H. S. and at the end of the second 21 to 18, and was our victory. The rooters were on their feet every second of the game and the excite-ment was intense all the time. “Heinie” held Stonebreaker to two field goals while “Mainie” hit the bas-ket with unfailing accuracy. Reed, Anderson and Robertson aided them in this great victory. Montgomery’s coaching and Myer’s support in money matters showed to advantage in this big game.Over confidence and real old fash-ioned “tuff luck” lost our tournament game to Clinton. The score stood 18 to 17. Clinton, however, gave Wingate their closest and hard-est won battle of the tournament, so we have nothing to be ashamed of and are proud of this year’s team.Other games of importance were those with Bedford and the one with Paoli, both at these towns. The Bedford game for the support given the team; about 75 rooters followed the team to Bedford and helped them carry home a victory of 21 to 15. The Paoli game be-Page Fifty-two |
