Description: BASKET BALL--1913-4--Continuedcause of the injury to Hawk Robertson which occurred here. Rob-ertson was one of Montys very best men and because of this injurywas compelled to retire from the game and quit school for theremainder of the year.Coach Montgomery has shown his skill as a coach in his abilityto find good men. Anderson was worked into a very valuable man atcenter and forward, although his first year on a regular team. Maywas brought out in a very short time by him also and developed intoan expert. All of the men used this year were first class basket ballmen, but of his utility players it must be said that the only thing hold-ing them out of a regular position was size.We expect them to grow. The seasons score is as follows:B. This has not been for lack of material, but for thelack of an efficient coach. Mr. Myers promises to act in thatrole for the team this year. There are but two old veterans, Glenn Brown and Shirley White,of the old team of 11 in school this year. Brown was chosen captainfor the team. There is a large squad of men trying for the team. This insuressuccess. The weather has been somewhat against practice, but a goodteam may be turned out if a few sunny days will only come. The cutting of the squad will be a hard proposition this year. Theinter class teams have made this somewhat difficult, as the men whoreally do play ball have not fixed positions. The following is a number of the men who are trying for positions:Rogers, Chambers, Farr, P. Brown PitcherSummers, Myers, Burke CatcherWoolery, Reed First BaseBrown, Bollenbacher Second BaseWells, May, Barbour, OHarrow Third BaseNorman, McNabb Short StopThe strongest competition will be in the outfield. About twentymen are contesting for the three positions. Gilmore, Reed, Louden,Hays, Ping, Weaver, Borgmann, Southerland, Robertson, Farr, Ander-son, Dillman, Taylor, Brown, Simmons, East, Hunter and D. Rogers areamong the contestants.Games will probably be scheduled with Bedford, Greencastle,Martinsville and Orleans. The boys are saving all the pins they find and are even robbingthe blacksmith shops of horseshoes with a view of obtaining good luck.Page Fifty-three
