Description: |
The monument shown on this plate commemorates the Battle of Baltimore, one of the turning points in the War of 1812. On September 13, 1812, the British fleet bombarded Fort McHenry in an attempt to take the city of Baltimore. When that failed, they launched a landing party during the night, but the Americans opened fire on them. The next morning, an enormous American flag was raised over the Fort to signal it was still standing. Francis Scott Key saw the flag, and was so inspired by it that he wrote a poem that is now the National Anthem The Star-Spangled Banner.
