Part of the American Views series, this plate depicts the famous Catskill Mountain House. Built in 1823, near Palenville, New York, on a plateau with stunning views of the Hudson Valley on one side and two lakes on the other, this hotel was patronized by the elite in society, including three U.S. presidents Ulysses S. Grant, Chester A. Arthur, and Theodore Roosevelt. The hotel enjoyed a long run of popularity, but eventually closed in 1941.
