Teacup and Saucer with Log Cabin Pattern

Description: While it is hard to believe that a tea set was used as political propaganda, this teacup and saucer were part of William Henry Harrisons successful 1840 Presidential campaign. The imagery is deeply intertwined with the image Harrison wished to portray to the American people. The log cabin represents where he was born (even though he was born in a large home in Ohio), the flag symbolizes his patriotism and military career, and the hard cider barrel is his tie to the common man. It is interesting to note that while women could not vote, they could express their support of Harrison through their tea and dinner ware.
