Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre. March 10, 1944Dearest Alice,I am still in the states and on the west coast. I am having it very nice here and feel excellent. I took in a movie last night, “The Purple Heart.” Don’t see it. Considering the fact that I’m sentimentalist and found all the sadness possible, I enjoyed the show.I haven’t received mail yet but expect some today or tomorrow. It takes time to transfer all of this and the army does do a very good job of getting it to us as soon as possible. How is Susan? I want you to be sure and tell me the things she does etc. If you have her picture taken, get one made the size of the snapshot of you and I in front of Vi’s house. That is the ideal size for my pocket folder. It can be a little larger than that. I think it would be a good idea to have her picture taken even if you have to take a chance on the lousy photographer in Huntington. Don’t pay for them until you see the proofs. Just give them a deposit if it is required. When you write I’d like you to keep me posted on whether Gib Yentes has or not and anyone else I might know.I hope to get a pass while I am here so that I can take in a town. The U.SO’s and civilians treat the soldiers swell around here. So much for now.All my love, Harold |
