Letter from John Harold Harris (1916-1987) to his wife Alice Clair Honan (1920-1986), his daughter Susan Lou Harris (1943-2008), and his mother Della B. Fear (1888-1974). Harris served as a U.S. Army cook in the Pacific Theatre. Enclosed is a six pence worth 8¢ I’ve sent a florin—a shilling—this sixpenceA three pence & a penny. Let me know if you’ve received all of them as I want to keep one of each.April 26, 1944Dear Alice, Susan & Mother,Last night I received your one letter post marked March 28th, two from Vi March 15th & 22nd and one from Virginia Woeberking, the old maid that I worked with & who moved to California. I enjoyed all of these more than any I have received. Alice you keep up your thoughts because I have some of the same ideas at times. I won’t vote for any man who has had any military experience or for anyone encouraging military training after the war. I hope Henry Ford knows something and has some reason for saying that the war will end soon. Vi and Bill seem to think they will settle in Huntington. I’ll be glad when I hear they are started. She & Bill will just have to have plenty of guts and leave worry behind. She wrote that the movies were good and that she’ll send the snapshots as soon as she can. I’m still looking for a picture of Susan or of both of you the size of this square or smaller. That is the size of my pocket folder. I can imagine you and Mother and your radio programs. Do you remember the night that she decided to wear her hair piled on top of her head? I can also imagine that both of you were eating or drinking something. I hope that Dals aren’t expecting a family. I hardly think it possible. I may be cooking some in a few days but at present I’m taking it easy & I’m very well satisfied. Will write more tomorrow.Love, Harold.I can see Susans 2 big white teeth. |
