Description: |
The Beardsley Paper Mill (also known as the Elkhart Paper Mill) was built on the south side of Beardsley Avenue about 1846-47. The mill along with the Elkhart Flour Mill were commonly called the Christiana Mills, after the river that powered them. It was the 2nd paper mill to be built in northern Indiana. The mill was built by Havilah Beardsley and later run by his sons James Rufus, Erwin, Charles and son-in-law Benjamin L. Davenport. In 1874, the mill was destroyed by fire but rebuilt in brick. It was run by the Beardsleys until 1890, then the paper mill was operated under different managements. It was damaged by fire in 1900 and again in 1909 which destroyed the building altogether. |
