Arisman Saw Mill

Description: The Arisman Saw Mill was located at the mouth of Christiana Creek at 617-619 E. Beardsley Ave. on the east side of what was the Big Four Railway Bridge over the St. Joseph River. Sam and Alex Arisman leased the original mill from Dr. Havilah Beardsley. When the mill was destroyed by fire, Sam sold his interest to Alex who secured a lease for the site and erected the building shown in the picture. The Arisman Mill ran year round and supplied much of the lumber for the Elkhart area, including the 1870s building boom brought about by the opening of Lake Shore railroad shops. The building was torn down in 1890.
