Description: |
During the 1870s, also known as the Victorian era, ladies hairstyles became much more elaborate, using lots of false hair. Small hats, like this one, rode this sea of curls like ships, tilted either forward or back secured by a ribbon or lace! Middle-class women did their best to follow this fashion, but clothing purchase and care consumed a relatively much higher part of their budget than it does for us. Keeping up appearances was an important way to maintain ones place in the community. This hat is made from newspaper, probably by the original wearer or a family member. |
