Description: |
Bonnets of the 1830s to the 1850s had a projecting rim framing the face, often trimmed both outside and in with ribbon, cloth flowers, tulle, lace, and tied under the chin with a ribbon bow. While ready-made bonnets were available, many middle-class women bought a plain bonnet & trimmed it each season (or as often as they could afford to) to suit the current fashion. Straw bonnets were usually worn for summer. The close-fitting bonnets fit well over the confined hairstyles and complemented the voluminous skirts producing the desired pyramidal effect of a female figure tapering upward from a wide, legless base of skirts to a demure, well-controlled head. |
