Description: |
Barton seems to be apologizing for a misunderstanding and hastens to answer Sewalls letter to correct it. She comments about being asked to interest herself with the WRC (Womans Relief Corps) and GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), organizations formed to assist veterans and survivors of soldiers of the Civil War. She may be asking them to support the National Council of Women. Barton goes on to talk of the yellow fever epidemic in Florida, lamenting the hundreds of thousands in aid to Jacksonville and hundreds of thousands in aid from the government, but not a penny to the Red Cross. We are tired, sore and heavy-hearted. She closes, noting how close she feels to Sewall that she would take the liberty of complaining.Clara Barton was nicknamed the angel of the battlefield for her work helping wounded soldiers during the Civil War. She then spent the following four years assisting with identification of prisoners who died at Andersonville. In 1881, Miss Barton founded the American Red Cross. |
