A scene from the grand finale race of August 1909 shows how close to the track spectators were standing that day. The track was paved with gravel and conditions deteriorated as the race progressed. Accidents occurred and two spectators were killed and others were injured. The race was stopped with 26 laps remaining and Lee Lynch was declared the winner. An ambulance and its driver wait in the infield. The original nitrate negative was copied with funds provided by a grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission in 1990. This digital image was created from that copy. The copy prints and negatives are stored in Microfiche Number order. |
